CTBTO REGIONAL TRAINING COURSE FOR THE SOUTHEAST ASIA, PACIFIC, AND FAR EAST REGION HELD IN ULAANBAATAR
The Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), is organizing a training course on capacity building of the National Data Centres for the Southeast Asia, Pacific, and Far East region in Ulaanbaatar from 25 to 29 May 2026.
The opening ceremony featured remarks by President of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences Mr. Demberel Sodnomsambuu, Director of the Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics Mr. Odonbaatar Chimed, and CTBTO instructors. More than 30 experts and specialists from 15 member states in the region are participating in this training. The Permanent Mission in Vienna supported the preparatory arrangements for the event.
Mongolia signed the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty in 1996 and became one of its original signatory states. This year marks the 30th anniversary of that event. Currently, four stations of the CTBTO’s International Monitoring System are operating in Mongolia. These include the seismic station PS25, the infrasound station IS34, and the radionuclide stations RN45 and SPALAX.
The CTBTO aims to prevent nuclear testing worldwide and has continued to play an important role in strengthening international security and the nuclear non-proliferation regime.
Former CTBTO Executive Secretary Wolfgang Hoffmann visited Mongolia in 2000, while the current Executive Secretary Robert Floyd visited in 2024.
